Thank you for sharing this helpful article. I was in search of a free theme, and you have compiled them all in one place. I have just one small question, Astra is known as a paid theme, but they also offer a free version. Can the Astra free theme fulfill the requirements for blogging?

    • WPBeginner Support says

You can have a blog using their free theme, it would depend on how you want the site to look for if the theme is the right one for you.

    • Moinuddin Waheed says

As for the basic blogging is concerned, there wouldn’t be any problem using Astra free theme.
It comes with lots of customisation options even in the free version that you will feel confident making a good looking blog.
However, if you need more options and want to scale with the blog, you can always make a transition to the premium theme.

Astra template is great for blog even in free version. I have tried it and it is really not necessary to have a paid version for a basic and quality blog. So I can answer your question that yes, the Astra is great even in the basic version.

This is what it means when Google says ‘Write people first content’. For one author to research and write about 64 free WordPress themes shows that you have your audience in mind. Thanks for this awesome post, Man!

    • Dayo Olobayo says

Couldn’t agree more. This is exactly the kind of content that makes WPBeginner such a valuable resource. Researching 64 themes is a huge time-saver for readers. Maybe in the future, there could be an option to filter the themes by features like responsiveness or built-in SEO tools.

  4. Jiří Vaněk says

The appearance template is the most important foundation after the editorial system itself. It must be optimized not only for speed, but recently I have been emphasizing optimization for SEO, mainly to have clean code without unnecessary things. I often first test the bare template via GTmetrix and pagespeed insight. I have experience with Astra and also with Sydney. They are both great templates. I use GeneratePress for my website, which also has great customer support.

  5. A Owadud Bhuiyan says

Do themes affect my website if I use any page builder?

I mean is it necessary to check if this themes is compatible with my page builder or not?

    • WPBeginner Support says

It would depend on the page builder, normally they are not required but if you are attempting to tweak a theme with a page builder it would be best to check the compatibility.

Quite some time ago I set up a blog on WP using a free theme, “Magnolia” something or other. It was offered in two colors:a plum/pink and blue. I can’t locate it now. Poof and it was gone. Did you discontinue it? And other options of similar designs?

I want an illustrated theme like rendered decorative art design, NOT photography of any kind in the theme.

I had not made the blog go live because I was still choosing categories. I would like to be able to pick up where I was and activate my blog.

Can you direct me or give me any help?

I have started with using the theme modernize, which looks fine.
But there is only one area for widgets, sidebar.
It is not possible to deactivate widgets on certain pages, for example on “home”.

Now am looking for a similar theme which has the specs of “modernize”:
    – one column page
    – usage of page builder
    – set a one column page to front page

And has the specs which I miss with “modernize”:
    – more widget areas, footer area
    – easy integration of social buttons via SHARING faciity

Thanks a lot for your help.

I am sorry but almost none of those themes look like a food blog theme. That’s not really a list that is helpful for the food bloggers. There are better options on alone and your list doesn’t include even one of them?

Did you get paid to advertise these themes? Or did the author of the article didn’t bother to do a little research?
