15 Best WordPress Newspaper Themes – 2026 (Tested & Ranked)

Running an online newspaper means publishing fast, often, and across a lot of categories. If your theme can’t keep up, then your breaking stories get buried and readers leave before they ever find them.

A good newspaper theme fixes that. It gives you a clear front page, easy navigation, and the publishing tools you need to keep readers coming back every day.

The trouble is that most theme lists are padded with generic options that were never built for news. So we installed and tested the top contenders on real news-style sites to see which ones actually hold up.

In this guide, we’ll share the best WordPress newspaper themes for building a credible, fast, and engaging news website. 🗞️

How We Test and Review WordPress Newspaper Themes

News sites have demands that an average blog theme just isn’t built for. You’re publishing daily, juggling lots of categories, and competing for attention on the front page.

For this roundup, we installed and tested each theme as if we were running an active online newspaper.

Here’s what we looked at:

  • Front-page and category layouts – We checked how well each theme highlights breaking stories, featured posts, and category sections without overwhelming readers.
  • Daily publishing tools – Since news sites post constantly, we looked for features like featured-post areas, sliders, and live previews that make frequent publishing fast.
  • Monetization features – We tested built-in ad spots, news tickers, and WooCommerce support so you can earn from display ads, sponsorships, or subscriptions.
  • Mobile readability – Most news is read on phones, so we tested each theme on mobile to make sure headlines, images, and menus stay easy to use.
  • Performance under load – We checked load times and responsiveness to see how each theme holds up as content and traffic grow, including during high-traffic events.
  • Documentation and support – We reviewed setup guides and contacted developers when needed to gauge how helpful their support teams are.

Sydney is one of the best WordPress themes on the market, and it ships with a starter site built specifically for newspaper websites. During testing, we imported that design in one click and had a working news front page in minutes.

We liked how easily you can adjust layouts, colors, and typography without touching code. Plus, there’s a sticky navigation menu that keeps your categories within reach as readers scroll.

Most importantly for a news site, Sydney is lightweight and fast in real-world use, which matters when readers click through several articles per visit.

8. GeneratePress

14. ColorMag

ColorMag

When we tried it, it offered much more value than other free themes, making ColorMag one of the best choices if you are just getting started.

15. Editorial

Editorial

Editorial is a free theme designed specifically for news websites. It uses a widgetized layout that lets you drag and drop sections to build your front page.

It comes with multiple sidebars, unlimited colors, and live-preview customization, and it’s translation-ready for multilingual sites. If you want a no-cost starting point for a news site, it’s worth a look.

Why We Don’t Recommend the Newspaper Theme by tagDiv

If you’ve researched newspaper themes before, then you’ve probably come across Newspaper by tagDiv. It’s a powerful, popular theme, and in the right hands, it can produce a great-looking news site.

We left it off our list on purpose, though, for a few reasons:

  • It can feel heavy. The theme packs in a lot, and on a content-heavy news site, that can work against your page speed unless you carefully optimize it. Speed matters for both your readers and your SEO.
  • It locks you in. A lot of the design relies on tagDiv’s own page builder and shortcodes. If you ever switch themes, much of that work doesn’t carry over, which makes migrating away painful.
  • It’s more than most publishers need. For beginners and small newsrooms, the themes above get you to a clean, fast, professional news site with far less complexity.

It’s not a bad theme. It’s just not the easiest or most flexible starting point for most people, which is why we recommend the options above instead.

Bonus: How to Set Up Your WordPress Newspaper Website

Once you’ve picked a theme, you’ll need web hosting and a domain name to get your newspaper site online. A domain name is your site’s address on the web, and web hosting is where your files live.

News sites tend to have a lot of content and traffic, so you’ll want a host that gives you enough room and handles visitors smoothly. If you’re just starting out, we recommend Bluehost, an official WordPress.org recommended provider.

Bluehost Coupon Code

For WPBeginner users, Bluehost offers a free domain name, a free SSL certificate, and a big discount on web hosting.

After signing up, follow our step-by-step guide on how to make a website to install WordPress and your theme. If you need help with the theme itself, see our guide on how to install a WordPress theme.

Frequently Asked Questions About WordPress Newspaper Themes

Before you start building your news website, you might still have a few questions. Here are the answers to the most common questions about WordPress newspaper themes.

What is the best free WordPress newspaper theme?

ColorMag and Editorial are both strong free options built for news sites. If you want room to upgrade later, the free version of Sydney is also a great starting point, since it shares the same starter sites as the paid version.

Do I need a dedicated newspaper theme, or will a magazine theme work?

There’s a lot of overlap, and many themes work for both. Newspaper themes lean toward fast-moving, frequently updated content with features like breaking-news tickers, while magazine layouts emphasize featured visuals. If your site is more feature-led, see our guide to the best WordPress magazine themes.

How do I add a breaking news ticker to my site?

Some themes on this list, like Prime News and Domino, include a news ticker built in. If your theme doesn’t, you can add one with a plugin. See our guide on how to add a scrolling news ticker in WordPress.

How can I make money from a newspaper website?

Most news publishers earn through display ads, sponsored posts, affiliate links, or paid subscriptions. Many of the themes above include dedicated ad spots, and ones with WooCommerce support let you sell subscriptions or merchandise directly.

How do I keep a content-heavy news site fast?

Choose a lightweight theme, use quality hosting, and add a caching plugin. Optimizing images and using a CDN help too. For the full rundown, see our guide to WordPress speed and performance.

  1. For me, a blog is almost the same as a news website. And since I have a blog, I was really interested in this list of templates. Once again, it’s a great selection of high-quality templates, and I personally find Astra to be really good. However, now I have a wide range of options to consider for inspiration. But with you, I always know that the selected templates will be genuinely high-quality and well-tested. So, in my opinion, they’re not just great for news sites but also for blogs. Thanks for the selection.

  2. I have used newspaper theme and Colormag theme for making a news website for client.
infact my first every encounter with WordPress was this newspaper theme that a friend of mine had asked me to troubleshoot and I got an intuitive feeling of using it ever again.
Thanks for taking me to the nostalgic thoughts.

  3. Hello, and thanks for posting this. We are looking for a theme that looks like an actual newspaper. Almost everything I see is a jumbled unfocused mess of photos with almost no text. The problem is no focal point, nothing that steers the reader to the most important or lede story. We want to have the look of a sober, professional, serious news conveyor. Our site is regional and specific. Our readers are informed on policy and legislative activity. We do not want to look like a comic book. At the same time, we have no revenue source and must do this inexpensively until we monetize the site, probably in about six months. Thanks.
