How We Test and Review Gutenberg-Friendly WordPress Themes

To bring you this showcase, we personally installed and tested every theme on the list.

Our goal was to evaluate how well each theme works with the Gutenberg block editor — including layout flexibility, block styling, and ease of customization — so we could confidently recommend only the best.

In our experience, a Gutenberg-friendly WordPress theme should strike a good balance of the following:

  • Clean, flexible layouts – Gutenberg gives you block-level control. So, we look for compatible themes that offer professional layouts out of the box — whether they’re classic themes that support the block editor or modern full-site editing (FSE) block themes.
  • Mobile friendliness – We make sure that each theme we feature looks great on phones, tablets, and desktops. That’s non-negotiable today.
  • Customization options – We check if the theme should make it easy to tweak colors, fonts, and layout settings — no code required.
  • Full Gutenberg compatibility – Some WordPress themes say they support Gutenberg, but we go a step further. We look for themes that offer a smoother editing experience, like a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) editor that matches what visitors will see.
  • Speed and performance – We know performance affects both user experience and SEO. That’s why we check loading times and avoid bloated themes.

Of course, the right theme for you also depends on your design preferences, how hands-on you want to be, and whether you need extra features like eCommerce support.

We’ve included a range of options here — from simple blog themes to more feature-rich full-site editing (FSE) designs — so there’s something for everyone.

Why Trust WPBeginner?

At WPBeginner, our team has over 16 years of hands-on experience with WordPress — including themes, plugins, design, SEO, and site performance.

We also manage several high-traffic WordPress websites ourselves, so we know what it takes for a theme to not only look great but also work well in real-world use.

Each theme on this list has been carefully reviewed and tested with the Gutenberg block editor in mind.

We don’t just look at design. We test how well the theme handles blocks, supports full site editing (FSE) where available, and delivers a smooth editing experience from the back end to the front end.

What specifications does such a template have to meet in order to be suitable for Gutenberg?

    • WPBeginner Support

The theme would need to be designed with Gutenberg in mind, there are still some older themes that are for the old editor.

Thanks, I assumed that all the ones in the official repository are suitable for Gutenberg. So I have to focus on it better next time.

  2. Moinuddin Waheed

Most modern themes are good for Gutenberg as Gutenberg is the new crush for wordpress community.
As I can see and predict, Gutenberg based block editors will take over the page builders due to their efficiency and speed.
Though it will take time for Gutenberg to make as friendly as page builders are but it will do in the future.

  3. Valerie Way

Hello and thank you for the comprehensive themes collection! It’s great that we already have a decent choice of themes for the new editor and that yet many others continue to appear. This gives hope to think that everyone will be able to find a suitable theme for their site and that the transition to Gutenberg thus will be as smooth as possible for most of the users.
