First thing you need to do is install and activate the Top Commenters Widget. Upon activation, visit Appearance » Widgets and simply drag and drop Top Commenters Widget to your sidebar.

Configuring top commenters widget settings

The widget comes with powerful settings that you can configure to meet your needs. First you can provide a title for the widget, the default title is ‘Top Commentators’.

After that you can add an optional text to thank users or simply leave it blank. The widget also allows you to exclude users from top commenters list. You may want to exclude yourself or other authors of your site.

By default the widget will reset the top commenter data every month however you can change that into week, month, year, or list all time top commenters as well.

Among other options, you can choose whether you would like the usernames to be linked. You can also add nofollow attribute to the links.

Lastly, you can show an award image next to your top commenters or set a benchmark for the award. There is even an option to enter the URL of your own custom award image.

Once done, simply save the changes and your widget will be displayed in your sidebar.
