ScalaHosting

ScalaHosting is a managed VPS hosting company that has collected a long list of industry awards for its cloud hosting. But if you’re like most smart people, you don’t make decisions based on awards, and you want to see real speed test results.

In July 2026, I tested ScalaHosting the same way I tested 14 other WordPress hosting companies, with an identical WordPress site on a custom domain, the same tools, and the same checklist.

This ScalaHosting review will show you the real numbers from my rigorous speed test using industry-standard benchmarking tools. It also answers the bigger question: is a managed VPS worth paying more for?

Quick Answer – Is ScalaHosting Worth It?

Yes, ScalaHosting is worth it if your website has outgrown shared hosting. It scored 73 out of 100 on our WPBeginner Score, which places it 5th out of our 7 recommended hosts, and it is the only managed VPS on that list.

In my hosting speed test, my ScalaHosting test site stayed quick and steady under a 50-user traffic spike and recorded no downtime. A VPS gives your website dedicated resources, so a busy neighbor on the server can never slow you down.

A managed VPS costs more than a $3 shared plan because you are buying dedicated resources and a team that runs the server for you. If you are launching your first website on a budget, a shared host like Hostinger or Bluehost is the better start, and ScalaHosting is the step up for when that site grows.

About ScalaHosting

ScalaHosting started in 2007 and has built its name on managed cloud VPS hosting. While most VPS providers rent third-party tools like cPanel, ScalaHosting has its own platform.

ScalaHosting Review

ScalaHosting makes both SPanel (their free control panel) and SShield (their security system) in-house. That control over their own tools is their pitch, and the awards from industry publications back their reputation.

I did not let the awards influence my review. The verdict below comes from what my hosting speed test actually measured.

Pros and Cons of ScalaHosting

Pros

  • Managed VPS with dedicated CPU, RAM, and NVMe storage – your site never shares server resources with strangers
  • Free SPanel control panel removes the cPanel license fee most VPS hosts pass on to you
  • SShield security watches your server in real time and blocks attacks automatically
  • Daily offsite backups included on every plan
  • Free migration with no downtime – ScalaHosting’s team moves your sites for you
  • Anytime money-back guarantee, so you are not locked into a long term

Cons

  • Costs more than shared hosting, and the renewal is nearly three times the intro price
  • Slower page loads than several cheaper shared hosts we tested (details in the speed test section below)
  • The entry tier starts with 2 CPU cores and 2 GB RAM, so resource-heavy sites need a bigger plan
  • Only three of its own data centers (Dallas, Sofia, and Bucharest)

How I Tested ScalaHosting (Methodology)

I used the same testing protocol for every hosting company in our comparison. I set up an identical WordPress site with a default theme and test content, including images, on a custom domain.

Then I ran the same four tests – GTmetrix for speed and LCP, k6 for stress with 50 virtual users at the same time, a response-time test from 6 global regions, and 30 days of UptimeRobot monitoring.

Those four tests make up the performance side of the WPBeginner Score, which counts for 80% of the total. Each test carries a set weight, so no single lucky number can carry a host.

The other 20% of the score comes from value. For that part I look at what the plan really costs and gives you in return – the intro price, the renewal price, the resources and limits you get, and the quality of support.

The full methodology, the exact weights, and every host’s raw numbers are in our best WordPress hosting guide.

ScalaHosting Performance Test Results

Below you can find my full ScalaHosting speed test results.

Speed Test (LCP and Page Load)

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how quickly the main content of a page appears. It is the speed number that Google’s Core Web Vitals care about most.

My ScalaHosting test site showed an LCP of 980 ms, and the full page loaded in 981 ms.

ScalaHosting speed test showing fully loaded time of 981 ms

I will be honest about this number. I expected the dedicated VPS resources to win on raw page loads, and they did not.

When I tested other popular hosts, the median LCP was 659 ms, and several cheaper shared hosts loaded faster.

My ScalaHosting test site made up for the slower first load with consistency under pressure, which the stress test below shows.

Server Response Time (Global Average)

Speed test tools load the whole page with images included, but that’s only one part of the performance. To see raw server speed, I also measured time to first byte (TTFB) from data centers in 6 regions around the world.

ScalaHosting averaged 526 ms across the 6 regions.

Global response time test result

Response times in North America were strong, and regions farther from my test server were slower. If most of your visitors are in North America, then the response will be just fine for you.

If your audience is global, SPanel includes Cloudflare CDN integration. A CDN serves your content from locations closer to your visitors and closes most of that gap.

Stress Test (50 Virtual Users)

To see how a host behaves under a traffic spike, I sent 50 virtual users to the test site at the same time with k6 by Grafana Labs and recorded the P95 response time.

This is where the managed VPS earns its price. ScalaHosting held a 29 ms P95 response with barely any fluctuation.

Stress test result showing p95 response time of 29 ms

On shared hosting, a busy neighbor or your own traffic spike can slow every page. My ScalaHosting test site had its own dedicated resources, and you can see the difference in how flat the response curve stayed.

Uptime Monitoring (30 Days)

I monitored the ScalaHosting test site with UptimeRobot, checking every 5 minutes. Over the 30-day window, it recorded no downtime and no incidents.

ScalaHosting uptime monitoring

ScalaHosting backs its VPS hosting with a 99.9% uptime guarantee. In our monitoring window, it stayed above its own promise.

How ScalaHosting Compares to Other Hosts We Tested

A managed VPS is a different category from a $3 shared plan, but most readers compare them anyway. Here is how ScalaHosting performed against the most popular shared hosts from our comparison, all tested with the identical setup.

HostLCPGlobal responseUptimeIntro / renewalWPBeginner Score
ScalaHosting980 ms526 ms100%$14.95 / $39.9573 / 100
Hostinger659 ms227 ms100%$2.69 / $10.9988 / 100
SiteGround608 ms369 ms100%$2.99 / $17.9975 / 100
Bluehost933 ms599 ms100%$2.99 / $9.9969 / 100

The shared hosts beat ScalaHosting on raw page speed, and they cost less.

ScalaHosting’s case is different. You are buying dedicated resources that stay steady under load, plus server-level control that no shared plan offers. The WPBeginner Score weighs performance at 80% and value at 20%, and ScalaHosting’s 73 reflects exactly that mix – strong reliability with a higher price.

ScalaHosting’s Infrastructure and Technology

Most other ScalaHosting reviews skip what’s under the hood, and with this host the technology is the whole story. ScalaHosting builds its own platform instead of renting the usual industry tools.

The VPS itself – a VPS (virtual private server) gives your website its own slice of a server. Your CPU cores, RAM, and NVMe SSD storage are dedicated to you, so another site’s traffic spike never touches your pages.

SPanel – most VPS providers rent you cPanel, which now charges per account and adds a real monthly fee on its own. ScalaHosting’s in-house SPanel is free with unlimited accounts, and it manages websites, email, DNS, databases, and backups in one place.

ScalaHosting dashboard

SShield security – SShield is ScalaHosting’s AI-powered security monitor, and the company says it blocks more than 99.9% of attacks. It limits login attempts, blocks suspicious IPs automatically, and sends you a report with fix instructions if an attack ever gets through.

Web servers and storage – you choose your web server at signup from Apache, Nginx, and OpenLiteSpeed, with the paid LiteSpeed server as an option. The LiteSpeed cache plugin is available, and every plan runs on NVMe SSD storage, which is the faster generation of SSD.

Email and extras – every plan includes a free dedicated IP, free SSL from Let’s Encrypt, and anti-spam filtering. ScalaHosting also monitors email blacklists hourly, which keeps your messages landing in inboxes.

Data centers – ScalaHosting runs its own facilities in Dallas, Sofia, and Bucharest. If you need another region, then it also partners with AWS and DigitalOcean, so your managed VPS can run on their infrastructure around the world.

ScalaHosting Plans and Pricing

ScalaHosting offers shared, managed VPS, and self-managed cloud hosting. For this review, the managed cloud VPS plans are the relevant ones, because that is where the company puts its engineering effort.

ScalaHosting managed VPS plans
  • Entry Cloud – 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM, NVMe SSD storage, and unmetered bandwidth. $14.95 per month on the 36-month term with our link, renews at $39.95 per month.
  • Premium Cloud – the next step up in CPU, RAM, and storage. $29.95 per month on the 36-month term, renews at $54.95 per month.
  • Business Cloud – more resources for busy business sites. $44.95 per month on the 36-month term, renews at $96.95 per month.
  • Enterprise Cloud – the biggest preset configuration. $69.95 per month on the 36-month term, renews at $170.95 per month.

Every managed VPS plan hosts unlimited websites and includes SPanel, SShield, daily offsite backups, free SSL, a dedicated IP, and free migration. You can also build a custom configuration on their pricing page and set the exact CPU, RAM, and storage you want.

My advice – start on Entry Cloud. You can add CPU or RAM from your dashboard in minutes, without migrating to a new server, so there is no reason to overbuy on day one.

Free and Paid Hosting Addons

ScalaHosting’s headline price is honest, but a few details in the fine print are worth knowing before you buy.

  • Intro terms and renewals – the intro price requires the 36-month term, and the renewal on the entry plan is nearly three times the intro price. Every host we tested discounts the first term, so this practice is industry standard, but make sure to budget for the renewal rate.
  • LiteSpeed Web Server – OpenLiteSpeed is free on every plan, but the full LiteSpeed Web Server requires a separate paid license. Most sites will not notice the difference.
  • Managed vs self-managed – the prices above are for managed VPS plans, where ScalaHosting’s team runs the server. The company also sells cheaper self-managed cloud servers, so do not mix the two up when comparing prices.
  • Money-back guarantee – ScalaHosting advertises an anytime unconditional money-back guarantee, and if you cancel mid-term, they refund the unused time on your plan. That is more generous than the standard 30-day window most hosts offer.

ScalaHosting for Growing WordPress Sites

SPanel ships with a built-in WordPress Manager. Installing WordPress, running updates, and tightening security all happen from one screen.

ScalaHosting includes the Softaculous one-click installer too, and a new WordPress site takes about a minute to launch.

ScalaHosting's custom control panel

You also get staging and cloning tools, so you can test changes on a copy of your site before they go live. Developers get SSH, Git, WP-CLI access, and per-site PHP version control on every plan.

If your website already lives at another host, ScalaHosting’s team migrates it for free with no downtime. You hand over the old login details, they move every site you have, and they verify each one loads correctly before telling you the job is done.

ScalaHosting Customer Support

ScalaHosting offers 24/7 support through live chat, tickets, and email. The company advertises a 15 second average response time on chat and around 15 minutes on tickets.

ScalaHosting support options

The support team covers everything server-related, including migrations, updates, and hardware issues. That coverage is the managed part of a managed VPS – their technicians run the server, so you do not have to hire someone who can.

Support matters more on a VPS than on shared hosting because you have a whole server to look after. Having experts on call around the clock is a real part of what the price buys.

Who Should Use ScalaHosting and Who Should Look Elsewhere

Choose ScalaHosting if your website has outgrown shared hosting and you want dedicated resources without running a server yourself. It fits growing business sites, online stores that see traffic spikes, and agencies that host client sites, since SPanel includes white-label branding and sub-user accounts.

Its steady under-load results and perfect uptime in our monitoring back that recommendation with data.

Look elsewhere if you are launching your first website. A shared plan from Hostinger or Bluehost costs a fraction of a VPS and covers everything a new site needs.

And if you run a high-traffic eCommerce site and want the fastest managed WordPress setup we tested, take a look at Levamo (see our full hosting comparison).

Final Verdict – Is ScalaHosting the Right Choice for You?

ScalaHosting is perfect for website owners who have outgrown shared hosting and want VPS power without the server administration. The free SPanel control panel and the managed support remove the two usual barriers to a VPS – the license fee and the need for server management skills.

My verdict – if your site has hit the ceiling of its shared plan, visit ScalaHosting and start with the Entry Cloud plan. If you are starting your first site or looking for the fastest raw page loads for the least amount of money, our best WordPress hosting comparison shows which host won each category on the same tests.

FAQs About ScalaHosting

1. What are the disadvantages of ScalaHosting?

Based on our tests, the main ones are price and raw speed. A managed VPS costs more than shared hosting, renewal prices rise steeply after the intro term, and my test site’s page loads trailed the cheaper shared hosts we tested.

ScalaHosting also runs only three of its own data centers, and the entry plan’s resources suit small to medium sites rather than heavy ones.

2. Is a VPS better than shared hosting?

A VPS is better once your site has real traffic, because you get dedicated CPU and RAM instead of sharing a server with hundreds of other sites. Under a traffic spike, that is the difference between slowing down and staying steady.

For a first website, shared hosting is the smarter buy. It costs less, and you will not use the extra power a VPS gives you.

3. Is ScalaHosting good for WordPress?

Yes. SPanel includes a WordPress Manager and the Softaculous installer, so you can launch a WordPress site in under a minute and manage updates and security from one screen.

In our tests, a default WordPress site on ScalaHosting ran with no downtime and held up well under a 50-user traffic spike.

4. What is SPanel, and do I need cPanel with ScalaHosting?

SPanel is ScalaHosting’s in-house control panel and a full cPanel alternative. It handles websites, email, DNS, databases, backups, and security from one dashboard.

You do not need cPanel at all. SPanel is free with unlimited accounts, which removes the per-account license fee cPanel charges.

5. Where are ScalaHosting’s servers located?

ScalaHosting runs its own data centers in Dallas (Texas), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Bucharest (Romania).

It also partners with AWS and DigitalOcean, so you can deploy a managed VPS in other regions around the world.

6. Can ScalaHosting handle high traffic?

Yes, this is its strong suit. In our stress test with 50 virtual users hitting the site at once, response times barely moved.

If your traffic keeps growing, you can add CPU and RAM from the dashboard in minutes, without migrating to a new server.

7. How does ScalaHosting compare with Hostinger and SiteGround?

On our identical tests, both Hostinger and SiteGround loaded pages faster, and both cost less. They are the better pick for a first website or a small blog.

ScalaHosting wins on dedicated resources and server-level control. The comparison table above has the full numbers, and our best WordPress hosting guide covers every host we tested.

8. Which ScalaHosting plan should I get?

We recommend starting with their Entry Cloud plan. It hosts unlimited websites, and adding more resources later takes a few clicks, so there is no reason to overbuy on day one.
