DreamHost Performance Tests

For our WordPress hosting reviews, we sign up for each top hosting provider. After that, we set up demo websites so that we can properly test their claims with our own performance tests.

We signed up for a hosting account and installed WordPress for this DreamHost review. We used the default theme and filled our test site with Theme Unit Test Data, including media and images. This way, our test site looked and behaved like an actual WordPress site.

No one likes a slow website. A faster website is crucial for a better user experience and SEO rankings.

That’s why we ran the website speed test first. For this test, we used Pingdom, and here are the test results:

Our test site loaded in less than two seconds, which is good. However, this page load time test alone does not show the full picture because our test site has no traffic.

Next, we wanted to see how well DreamHost handles website traffic during peak hours. To measure this, we used a tool called K6 (formerly called Load Impact).

We gradually built up to 50 unique visitors at once to see how the server would handle increased requests from multiple connections at the same time.

Here is our first stress test result.

As you can see, our site remained available throughout the test. However, the response time fluctuated with users increased.

That’s because we turned off DreamHost’s pre-installed WordPress caching solution. Once we enabled a caching plugin, the stress test result improved dramatically.

As you can see, our test site handled 39.6 requests per second (6.600 requests total) with an average response time of 255 ms.

That’s incredible.

This means that if you have a WordPress blog, a small business website, or an online store, your website can easily handle sudden traffic spikes.

Next, we wanted to test how our DreamHost test site responds to requests from different geographic locations. To measure this, we used a tool called Bitcatcha.

    So, it seems there is a process in Dreamhost to kill all process under my userid if it goes beyond a certain memory usage. Now, Dreamhost support denied to let me know when it happens, denied to let me know the limit. Moreover, there was practically no change to the site for a while and a very bare minimum usage. Needless to say, I am super disappointed with the support ! Already looking for a replacement.

    I’ve been using DH for 10 years, with Virtual Private Server and the monthly chat support service. Despite having unlimited bandwidth and storage I’m looking to move off them because of email issues, and, too a lesser extent, slow page load times.

    For some reason, DH just doesn’t seem to be able to host email consistently. Sign up with Google and it works for years. With DH, there are problems every few months. Email stops working. iOS devices can’t log in. The latest: when I check my email accounts in the panel, my email user names have been replaced with my DH user name. The support guys don’t see that on their end, but it seems to affect my email.

    I run a business and I need reliable email. Too many problems with DH, especially for what I pay for their services. You’d think guys from CalTech could do better. But they’re too busy adding stuff to make the basics work.

One feature I found missing the ability for administrator to configure/COPY incoming mails to another email address (in panel.dreamhost.com) – i.e. retaining all incoming emails to the original addressee…as in t he forward email option, once email is downloaded by the designated addressee/s, the original addressee may not be able to receive those mails.

    Recently Dreamhost replaced the traditional CPanel with their own panel. Except on the new Panel options there is no ‘Hosting’ option. Uploading the public folder or viewing the file structure can only be done via FTP or SFTP. I took 3 emails before I got a decent answer back from Dreamhost. Their people are pretty awesome but their panel really leaves a lot to be desired. I’ll be migrating my sites to another provider.

    I built a client website on my domain. I needed help to export the files and download SQL. I live chatted with Dreamhost rep who sent me links to the tutorials that explained how to find the information that I needed. I was satisified with the speed and information that I obtained from customer service.

    I don’t like the website interface, though. I had little cause to login and use the Dreamhost interface as I made all site updates via wp-admin. On the rare occasion that I did use the Dreamhost interface I found that it is not at all intuitive and I had a hard time finding the information that I needed. My client uses a different web host. When I logged in to upload the files/SQL I found the interface to be intuitive and easy to use with clearly labeled icons for major areas of the site.

    I related via e-mail that my web site was being controlled and manipulated by a former employee who was finding great joy in making threats to either shut down or harm my web site. Made numerous attempts to get my issue fixed. Was stonewalled at every turn. When I asked via e-mail to please give me options to fix my problem, I got what looked like a form letter response. Not only did it take a long time for someone to respond, they did nothing to help me fix my problem nor did they offer any options to fix my problem. I find it hard to believe that I am the first customer that this has ever happened to and was looking for options of which I was offered none.

    Wise people say that don’t put your all eggs in one Basket but to me the basket of Dreamhost seems to be too secure to putt my all eggs in it. I not only use the hosting plane but also registered at least eight domains with Dreamhost. There may be others who may have better services but honestly speaking Dreamhost never let me think ‘out of the box’. I wish and pray they remain same. I know an instance where they did not bow down under pressure to remove a domain and hosting of an organization which governments wanted to shut down. That proved that the organization believes in privacy and professionalism and does not have any political linkage. I wish it keeps that way in future as well.

    I have been using Dreamhost for 6 years or so. There are occasional problems, but they generally get them resolved quickly. When it seems to be only a problem with my service, the support folks have had me up and running fairly rapidly. A couple times the outages were for extended periods of times, but anyone who has made a living troubleshooting electrical and electronics knows that sometimes things are hard to fix. So far there has not been an outage for what I call an unrealistically long time.
