Die offizielle Beta-Version wird am 12. Mai veröffentlicht, was bedeutet, dass bis zur endgültigen Veröffentlichung von WordPress 4.8 keine weiteren neuen Funktionen hinzugefügt werden. Es kann jedoch sein, dass einige der Funktionen in der Beta-Version es nicht in die endgültige Version schaffen.
Visueller Editor im Text-Widget
WordPress wird standardmäßig mit einem einfachen Textwidget geliefert. Dieses Widget enthält ein einfaches Textfeld, in das Sie Text und HTML-Code einfügen können.
Anfänger, die mit HTML nicht vertraut sind, konnten im Textwidget keine Links hinzufügen oder grundlegende Formatierungen verwenden. Dies wird sich in WordPress 4.8 ändern.
Das neue Textwidget verfügt über einen einfachen visuellen und Text-Editor. Ähnlich wie der, den Sie auf dem Bearbeitungsbildschirm für Beiträge sehen.
Damit können Anfänger leicht Links hinzufügen, Listen erstellen oder Text fett/kursiv machen, ohne HTML-Code schreiben zu müssen.
Das neue Bild-Widget
Wenn Sie jetzt ein Bild in der WordPress-Seitenleiste anzeigen möchten, müssen Sie HTML schreiben oder ein Plugin verwenden.
Mit WordPress 4.8 wird ein Bild-Widget eingeführt, mit dem Benutzer ganz einfach Bilder in die Seitenleiste einfügen können. Sie werden in der Lage sein, ein Bild direkt über das Widget hochzuladen oder ein beliebiges Bild aus der WordPress-Mediathek auszuwählen.
Wenn Sie auf das Bild auswählen klicken, öffnet sich das WordPress Media Uploader Popup, in dem Sie ein Bild hochladen oder auswählen können. Nach dem Einfügen des Bildes können die Benutzer eine Vorschau des Bildes im Widget-Bereich sehen.
Das neue Video-Widget
Ähnlich wie das Bild-Widget wird auch das Video-Widget in WordPress 4.8 eingeführt. Damit können Nutzer ganz einfach Videos in ihre Seitenleiste hochladen oder Videos von YouTube, Vimeo oder anderen OEmbed-Anbietern anzeigen.
Hinweis: Wir empfehlen, dass Sie niemals Videos auf Ihre WordPress-Website hochladen sollten. Verwenden Sie stattdessen einen Video-Hosting-Anbieter wie YouTube oder Vimeo. Klicken Sie einfach auf die Schaltfläche „Video auswählen“ im Widget und dann auf den Link „Von URL einfügen“.
Geben Sie die URL des Videos ein, das Sie einbetten möchten, und klicken Sie dann auf die Schaltfläche „Zum Widget hinzufügen“. Das Popup-Fenster des Medien-Uploaders wird ausgeblendet, und Sie sehen eine Miniaturvorschau Ihres Videos im Widget.
WordPress Nachrichten und Ereignisse Dashboard Widget
Mit WordPress 4.8 wird auch das Dashboard-Widget für WordPress-Veranstaltungen und -Nachrichten eingeführt. Es wird auf Ihrer WordPress-Dashboard-Seite erscheinen und Informationen über WordPress-Nachrichten sowie WordPress-Veranstaltungen in der Nähe Ihres Standorts enthalten. Es wird das ältere WordPress-News-Widget ersetzen, das nur WordPress-News anzeigte.
Wenn Sie mehrere Benutzer auf Ihrer Website haben, zeigt das Widget ihnen Ereignisse auf der Grundlage ihres Standorts an. Es wird automatisch versuchen, den Standort eines Benutzers zu erkennen, indem es dessen Zeitzone, Gebietsschema und IP-Adresse an api.wordpress.org sendet.
Die Benutzer können den Standort auch bearbeiten, um ihren Standort manuell einzugeben oder Ereignisse von einem anderen Standort aus anzuzeigen.
Verbesserungen unter der Haube
Diese Updates verbessern wesentliche Teile des WordPress-Kerns, sind aber hauptsächlich für Entwickler gedacht.
Das Customizer-Fenster wird nun auf größeren Bildschirmen proportional vergrößert. #32296
Der Name des Benutzers wird auf dem Bildschirm „Benutzer bearbeiten“ deutlich angezeigt. #28182
Die neue Funktion get_term_parents_list() wird als taxonomie-agnostische Version von get_category_parents() eingeführt. #17069

You mention users should not upload videos directly to their site but use a video host. Does this apply in all situations, or would it sometimes be better performance-wise if the site has a high bandwidth server or CDN to self-help extremely short videos i.e. under 20MB?

Hey William,
It is not just about bandwidth and performance. It is also about user experience. Your server may have the resources to serve the videos but your users may have slower or unreliable internet, older browser, no flash, compatibility issues with your video format, etc. Third party video hosting services such as YouTube are extremely good at optimizing user experience and serve your videos even on slow connections.

This will be a welcome addition but a lot of people may unknowingly strip out current edits from their existing widgets. Like the issue with the post editor, when you use the visual editor you can strip existing code (like a div tag for example). If you have the visual editor on, will this strip HTML like the post editor does?

Meh. Upgrades that may muck up text widgets on existing sites scares me. For new sites/users I can see the appreciation for the changes though.

Will the new Image, Text and Video Widgets be a new way to add advertisements in sidebars? It would seem to be that this would be an ideal use for them.

These are good improvements, but even some established plugins, such as the Black Studio TinyMCE Widget, have more features that enable the same tools found in the WP editor to insert images, videos, links, etc. Why didn’t WordPress think of that? And is „Hello, Dolly“ really necessary? Does anyone use that?

with the new video widget, will it allow for the &rel=0 to hide related videos?
I assume Olathe container will be size responsive?
Would also be great if it allowed for lazy load behind a custom thumbnail image.

I welcome those improvements to WordPress! I’m sure many of us have been wondering why those wasn’t built in WP, so no need now for extra plugins that slows down the sites

Great improvements but it would be great if The New Image Widget could have the option (input) to add URL link to the image as well. Most of the images in sidebar need to be linked to some external website.

When you insert an image in WordPress, the modal has link options along with title, caption, link target, css classes. So it’s super easy

I’m afraid I won’t get much excited about any of these updates until they improve the core functionality of the post editor. I find it quite flaky and the fact that it’s impossible to add code without a plugin is a major problem.
But having said that, the new widgets look very cool.
