WordPress 4.8 è stato rilasciato poche ore fa. Si tratta della prima major release del 2017, con alcune nuove funzionalità e miglioramenti attesi da tempo. In questo articolo vi mostreremo quali sono le novità di WordPress 4.8 e quali funzioni dovreste provare dopo aver aggiornato i vostri siti web.
La 4.8 è una release importante di WordPress e, a meno che non abbiate un servizio di hosting WordPress gestito, dovrete avviare manualmente l’aggiornamento.
Importante: Non dimenticate di creare un backup completo di WordPress prima di avviare l’aggiornamento.
I nuovi widget multimediali
In WordPress 4.8 sono presenti tre nuovi widget predefiniti. Gli utenti li chiedevano da tempo e finalmente sono arrivati.
Widget immagine
In precedenza, se gli utenti volevano aggiungere un’immagine alla barra laterale di WordPress, dovevano utilizzare un plugin o scrivere un HTML personalizzato.
Con WordPress 4.8, è possibile trascinare e rilasciare il widget immagine sulla barra laterale. È sufficiente fare clic sul pulsante “Aggiungi immagine” nelle impostazioni del widget per visualizzare il consueto caricatore di media di WordPress.
È possibile caricare l’immagine dal computer o selezionare un’immagine precedentemente caricata dalla libreria multimediale. Una volta caricata, fate clic sul pulsante “Aggiungi al widget” e potrete vedere l’immagine nell’anteprima del widget. Non dimenticate di fare clic sul pulsante Salva per salvare le impostazioni del widget.
Widget video
Come il widget delle immagini, WordPress 4.8 include anche un widget video. Permette di caricare facilmente i video nella barra laterale di WordPress o di visualizzare qualsiasi video da YouTube, Vimeo o qualsiasi altro fornitore di oEmbed.
Nota: si consiglia di non caricare mai i video sul proprio sito WordPress. Si consiglia invece di utilizzare un provider di hosting video come YouTube o Vimeo.
Il widget video consente di incorporare con estrema facilità i video dei più diffusi provider di video hosting. È necessario fare clic sul pulsante “Aggiungi video” nel widget. Si aprirà la finestra di caricamento dei media.
Successivamente, è necessario fare clic su “Inserisci da URL” e incollare l’URL del video. Appena incollato l’URL, WordPress recupererà la miniatura del video e la visualizzerà.
Fate clic sul pulsante “Aggiungi al widget” e vedrete la miniatura del video nell’area del widget. Non dimenticate di fare clic sul pulsante Salva per salvare le impostazioni del widget.
Widget audio
Simile ai widget video e immagini, il widget audio consente di aggiungere facilmente file audio alla barra laterale di WordPress. Basta cliccare sul pulsante “Aggiungi audio” per caricare il file audio.
Il widget incorporerà il file audio in un lettore audio HTML5. Supporta i formati di file audio MP3, OGG e WAV.
Editor visivo in un widget di testo
In precedenza, il widget di testo predefinito era solo un’area di testo semplice in cui era necessario aggiungere il proprio HTML anche per la formattazione di base. WordPress 4.8 viene fornito con il nuovo e migliorato widget di testo con il supporto dell’editor visivo.
È la versione leggera dello stesso editor visivo che si usa per scrivere post e pagine. Contiene pulsanti per rendere il testo in grassetto o corsivo, aggiungere elenchi e collegamenti. Gli utenti avanzati possono comunque passare all’editor di testo per scrivere manualmente l’HTML.
Miglioramenti dell’editor visuale
Quando si utilizzava l’editor visuale per scrivere i post, molti principianti trovavano difficile spostare il cursore dal link. WordPress 4.8 ha risolto questo problema e ora gli utenti possono semplicemente premere i tasti freccia destra o sinistra per spostare il cursore da un link.
Widget della dashboard di WordPress per le notizie e gli eventi
WordPress 4.8 ha introdotto anche il nuovo widget della dashboard “WordPress News and Events”. Appare nella schermata della dashboard dell’area di amministrazione di WordPress e mostra le notizie di WordPress e gli eventi di WordPress vicini alla vostra posizione.
Se avete più utenti sul vostro sito, ogni utente vedrà gli eventi vicini alla propria posizione. Il widget cerca automaticamente di indovinare la posizione dell’utente inviando il suo indirizzo IP, il fuso orario e la località a api.wordpress.org. Se si utilizza un servizio VPN, si vedranno gli eventi in base alla posizione del server utilizzato.
È anche possibile cambiare manualmente la posizione per vedere gli eventi vicino a voi o da qualsiasi altro luogo del mondo.
Modifiche sotto il cofano
WordPress 4.8 porta con sé alcuni cambiamenti interessanti anche per gli sviluppatori. Ecco alcuni di questi miglioramenti sotto il cofano.
Modifiche all’API dell’editor
Una nuova API per l’editor TinyMCE da istanziare dinamicamente tramite JS.(#35760)
Larghezza variabile del personalizzatore
Se avete utilizzato il personalizzatore del tema live su schermi di grandi dimensioni, potreste aver notato che la barra laterale appare troppo stretta. WordPress 4.8 rende la larghezza della barra laterale del customizer proporzionale alle dimensioni dello schermo degli utenti.(#32296)
Nome dell’utente visualizzato in modo evidente nella schermata di modifica dell’utente
A partire da WordPress 4.8, la schermata di modifica dell’utente mostra ora in modo evidente il nome dell’utente nell’intestazione.(#28182)
Ilwidget Tag cloud non usa il tag title
In precedenza il widget Tag cloud mostrava il numero di post archiviati sotto un tag nel popover del titolo. Il tag title nel codice è ora sostituito dall’attributo aria-label, più accessibile.(#35566)

Today I updated my WordPress from 4.71 to 4.8.
All seemed to go well but got the server Error 500 and could not get to my admin or dashboard.
I tried all the things that others have mentioned, including renaming the plugins folder, and also the theme so it defaults to another (to eliminate a theme conflict), but nothing would work for me.
I do have CPanel access and on the suspicion that it may be some caching issue, I deleted the plugin W3 Total Cache which I saw had many entries for this day.
I tried, but got some error messages that there were 2 other “cache.php” files that I needed to be removed from the wp-content file. One was object-cache.php but I do not recall the other one.
Since simply doing this WordPress update I have wasted several hours of work time and it has been quite exasperating.
So, when I removed that plugin manually in Cpanel, and deleted those 2 cache.php files, …It worked!
I now again have all dashboard access. Since this was such an unexpected hassle, I thought I would share the solution that at least worked for me, so it may also help others. Good luck.
Hope it goes more smoothly for you. At the very least I might suggest that you deactivate at least any caching, if not all, plugins before updating. If you turn some plugins back on, one at a time, at least you know what is causing the problem, but you may still have to use my solution after it shuts you out too.

I’ve noticed that the text widget stopped working after the WP 4.8 update. It shows perfectly fine on the appearance-widgets (front end) section but on the page widgets section in the back end, it doesn’t show the editable text fields so nothing can be entered in it. Any ideas?

I agree with Dorian, the same thing is happening to me, I use the video widget, and a black rectangle with a play bar underneath (that wouldn’t do anything) when I look at my site via firefox,
When I look at my site via Chrome, the widget does display the video twice: the black rectangle like above and an overlap video thumbnail of the youtube video!
I would think they test their widget before releasing it, so what I am doing wrong?

Can we discuss here to resolve text widget visual editor because of wordpress new release on 4.8, so it will be useful for all?
Because of the default visual editor in text widget. I have around more than 20 text widgets on my site with so many icon related html with anchor links, all will be deleted, If I save each (currently I have to copy paste from my backup file to modify them).
If text widget opens text editor default – not the visual editor in the text widget, It will be very helpful.

What happened to the edit page / view page buttons in the Admin Bar that allowed a logged-in Admin or Editor to edit and view a page, Woocommerce Product, Post, etc. when the published item is displayed in the web browser?
Is there a way to restore this critical functionality in WP 4.8? Why in the world would developers remove this???

We are using WordPress 4.8 and can still see the edit post, page, product, link in the admin bar. We don’t think it is a WordPress issue.

I tried video widget (with youtube videos) last night. There was a thumbnail generated during import, but every time I would attempt publishing it, there was a black rectangle with a play bar ubderneath (that wouldn’t do anything), so I gave up. I am using ET’s Extra theme…

WordPress allows you to easily update just go to the Dashboard > Updates page and click on the update button. However, before you do that, you need to create a complete WordPress backup. If something goes wrong, then you can restore your website using the backup.
