Hace apenas unas horas se ha lanzado la versión 4.8 de WordPress. Es la primera versión importante de 2017, con algunas características nuevas y mejoras muy esperadas. En este artículo, te mostraremos las novedades de WordPress 4.8 y qué características deberías probar tras actualizar tus sitios web.
4.8 es una versión importante de WordPress, y a menos que estés en un servicio de alojamiento gestionado de WordPress, tendrás que iniciar manualmente la actualización.
Importante: No olvide crear una copia de seguridad completa de WordPress antes de iniciar la actualización.
Los nuevos widgets de medios
Hay tres nuevos widgets por defecto en WordPress 4.8. Los usuarios habían estado pidiendo estos widgets durante mucho tiempo, y por fin están aquí.
Widget de imagen
Anteriormente, si los usuarios querían añadir una imagen a la barra lateral de WordPress, tenían que utilizar un plugin o escribir HTML personalizado.
Con WordPress 4.8, basta con arrastrar y soltar el widget de imagen en la barra lateral. Basta con hacer clic en el botón “Añadir imagen” en los ajustes del widget, y aparecerá el conocido cargador de medios de WordPress.
Puedes subir la imagen desde tu ordenador o seleccionar una imagen anterior de la biblioteca de medios. Una vez subida, haz clic en el botón “Añadir al widget” y podrás ver la imagen en la vista previa del widget. No olvides hacer clic en el botón guardar para establecer los ajustes del widget.
Widget de vídeo
Al igual que el widget de imagen, WordPress 4.8 también incluye un widget de vídeo. Permite subir vídeos fácilmente a la barra lateral de WordPress o mostrar cualquier vídeo de YouTube, Vimeo o cualquier otro proveedor de oEmbed.
Nota: te recomendamos que nunca subas vídeos a tu sitio de WordPress. En su lugar, deberías utilizar un proveedor de alojamiento de vídeos como YouTube o Vimeo.
El widget de vídeo hace que sea muy fácil incrustar vídeos de los proveedores de alojamiento de vídeo más populares. Tienes que hacer clic en el botón “Añadir vídeo” del widget. Aparecerá la ventana emergente de subida de medios.
A continuación, haz clic en “Insertar desde URL” y pega la URL del vídeo. En cuanto pegues la URL, WordPress obtendrá la miniatura del vídeo y la mostrará.
Haz clic en el botón “Añadir al widget” y verás la miniatura del vídeo en la zona de widgets. No olvides hacer clic en el botón guardar para establecer los ajustes del widget.
Widget de audio
Similar a los widgets de vídeo e imagen, el widget de audio te permite añadir fácilmente archivos de audio a tu barra lateral de WordPress. Solo tienes que hacer clic en el botón “Añadir audio” para subir tu archivo de audio.
El widget incrustará el archivo de audio en un reproductor de audio HTML5. Es compatible con los formatos de archivo MP3, OGG y WAV.
Editor visual en widget de texto
Anteriormente, el widget de texto por defecto no era más que un área de texto plano en el que era necesario añadir su propio HTML, incluso para el formato muy básico. WordPress 4.8 envía el nuevo y mejorado widget de texto compatible con el editor visual.
Es la versión ligera del mismo editor visual que usas para escribir entradas y páginas. Contiene botones para poner el texto en negrita o cursiva, añadir listas y enlazar. Los usuarios avanzados todavía pueden cambiar al editor de texto para escribir HTML manualmente.
Mejoras del editor visual
Al utilizar el editor visual para escribir entradas, muchos principiantes encontraban difícil alejar el cursor del enlazar. WordPress 4.8 ha corregido este problema y ahora los usuarios pueden pulsar las teclas de flecha derecha o izquierda para alejar el cursor de un enlace.
Widget del Escritorio de WordPress de Noticias y Eventos
WordPress 4.8 también ha introducido el nuevo widget ‘Noticias y Eventos de WordPress’. Aparece en la pantalla del escritorio de tu área de administrador de WordPress y muestra las noticias de WordPress, así como los eventos de WordPress cercanos a tu ubicación.
Si tienes varios usuarios en tu sitio, cada uno verá los eventos cercanos a su ubicación. El widget intenta adivinar automáticamente la ubicación del usuario enviando su dirección IP, zona horaria y configuración regional a api.wordpress.org. Si utilizas un servicio VPN, verás los eventos en función de la ubicación del servidor que estés utilizando.
También puedes cambiar la ubicación manualmente para ver los eventos cerca de ti o desde cualquier otro lugar del mundo.
Cambios bajo el capó
WordPress 4.8 trae algunos cambios interesantes también para los desarrolladores. Estas son algunas de las mejoras.
Cambios en la API del editor
Una nueva api para que el editor TinyMCE sea instanciado dinámicamente vía JS.(#35760)
Ancho variable del Personalizador
Si has usado el Personalizador de temas en pantallas grandes, habrás notado que la barra lateral se ve demasiado estrecha. WordPress 4.8 hace que el ancho de la barra lateral del Personalizador sea proporcional al tamaño de la pantalla del usuario.(#32296)
Elnombre del usuario se muestra de forma prominente en la pantalla de edición de usuario.
Desde WordPress 4.8, la pantalla de edición de usuario mostrará de forma prominente el nombre del usuario en el encabezado.(#28182)
El widget de nube de etiquetas no utilizará la etiqueta de título
Anteriormente, el widget de la nube de etiquetas mostraba el número de entradas archivadas bajo una etiqueta en la ventana emergente del título. La etiqueta de título en el código se sustituye ahora por el atributo aria-label, más accesible.(#35566)

Today I updated my WordPress from 4.71 to 4.8.
All seemed to go well but got the server Error 500 and could not get to my admin or dashboard.
I tried all the things that others have mentioned, including renaming the plugins folder, and also the theme so it defaults to another (to eliminate a theme conflict), but nothing would work for me.
I do have CPanel access and on the suspicion that it may be some caching issue, I deleted the plugin W3 Total Cache which I saw had many entries for this day.
I tried, but got some error messages that there were 2 other “cache.php” files that I needed to be removed from the wp-content file. One was object-cache.php but I do not recall the other one.
Since simply doing this WordPress update I have wasted several hours of work time and it has been quite exasperating.
So, when I removed that plugin manually in Cpanel, and deleted those 2 cache.php files, …It worked!
I now again have all dashboard access. Since this was such an unexpected hassle, I thought I would share the solution that at least worked for me, so it may also help others. Good luck.
Hope it goes more smoothly for you. At the very least I might suggest that you deactivate at least any caching, if not all, plugins before updating. If you turn some plugins back on, one at a time, at least you know what is causing the problem, but you may still have to use my solution after it shuts you out too.

I’ve noticed that the text widget stopped working after the WP 4.8 update. It shows perfectly fine on the appearance-widgets (front end) section but on the page widgets section in the back end, it doesn’t show the editable text fields so nothing can be entered in it. Any ideas?

I agree with Dorian, the same thing is happening to me, I use the video widget, and a black rectangle with a play bar underneath (that wouldn’t do anything) when I look at my site via firefox,
When I look at my site via Chrome, the widget does display the video twice: the black rectangle like above and an overlap video thumbnail of the youtube video!
I would think they test their widget before releasing it, so what I am doing wrong?

Can we discuss here to resolve text widget visual editor because of wordpress new release on 4.8, so it will be useful for all?
Because of the default visual editor in text widget. I have around more than 20 text widgets on my site with so many icon related html with anchor links, all will be deleted, If I save each (currently I have to copy paste from my backup file to modify them).
If text widget opens text editor default – not the visual editor in the text widget, It will be very helpful.

What happened to the edit page / view page buttons in the Admin Bar that allowed a logged-in Admin or Editor to edit and view a page, Woocommerce Product, Post, etc. when the published item is displayed in the web browser?
Is there a way to restore this critical functionality in WP 4.8? Why in the world would developers remove this???

We are using WordPress 4.8 and can still see the edit post, page, product, link in the admin bar. We don’t think it is a WordPress issue.

I tried video widget (with youtube videos) last night. There was a thumbnail generated during import, but every time I would attempt publishing it, there was a black rectangle with a play bar ubderneath (that wouldn’t do anything), so I gave up. I am using ET’s Extra theme…

WordPress allows you to easily update just go to the Dashboard > Updates page and click on the update button. However, before you do that, you need to create a complete WordPress backup. If something goes wrong, then you can restore your website using the backup.
