Ieri, sulla nostra pagina Facebook, abbiamo posto una domanda: “Se poteste eliminare una caratteristica o un elemento di WordPress, quale sarebbe?”. Alcuni membri della Community hanno espresso la loro opinione. Abbiamo posto la stessa domanda anche su Twitter. Uno dei nostri utenti ci ha inviato un messaggio diretto chiedendoci di cosa ci sbarazzeremmo. Dopo aver esaminato l’elenco delle caratteristiche suggerite dagli altri, abbiamo trovato sorprendente che nessuno abbia menzionato i collegamenti “Blogroll”.
Ai tempi in cui abbiamo iniziato a usare WordPress, la caratteristica dei link, alias blogroll, era affascinante. Ci consentiva di add-on e di rimuovere i colleghi sulla barra laterale senza dover ricorrere al codice. Per noi principianti era un sogno che si realizzava. Tuttavia, ora la caratteristica dei collegamenti sembra un po’ obsoleta e francamente non è così facile come i “menu”. In questo articolo, proponiamo di sostituire la caratteristica “Collegamenti” del blogroll con i menu di WordPress.
Nei nostri progetti recenti, ci siamo trovati a utilizzare un menu personalizzato dove prima usavamo i link. Per i nostri clienti è molto più flessibile controllare l’ordine dei colleghi con la semplice interfaccia di trascinamento che i menu offrono. Questa è di gran lunga una delle caratteristiche più richieste dai nostri clienti. Non fraintendeteci. I colleghi hanno alcune caratteristiche che vorremmo poter mantenere quando utilizziamo i menu. Quindi faremo un confronto tra le caratteristiche e vi lasceremo decidere se i “colleghi” del blogroll dovrebbero essere sostituiti dai menu di WordPress.
Caratteristiche dei “link” del blogroll:
- Possibilità di aggiungere Collegamenti personalizzati
- Aggiungere la descrizione del collega
- Categorizzare i colleghi
- Proprietà di destinazione (aprire il collega in una nuova finestra o nella stessa pagina)
- Specificare la relazione tra i colleghi utilizzando i tag rel:
- Indirizzo dell’immagine
- Indirizzo RSS
- Note
- Valutazioni
Vediamo ora quante di queste cose si possono già fare con i menu di WordPress. È possibile aggiungere collegamenti personalizzati utilizzando l’area “Collegamenti personalizzati” nei menu. È possibile suddividere i colleghi in categorie semplicemente creando menu separati per ogni categoria. Se guardate la scheda Opzioni dello schermo in alto a destra dello schermo dell’amministratore, vedrete che ci sono checkbox per Destinazione del link, Relazione con il link e Descrizione. Anche queste possono essere aggiunte. Cosa non possono fare i menu rispetto ai colleghi?
I menu non permettono di avere delle note “che sono ad uso degli amministratori per ricordare loro perché hanno aggiunto un collegamento”. Ancora una volta, sembra un po’ inutile che qualcuno abbia un collega nella barra laterale senza sapere perché l’ha aggiunto. Di solito, gli utenti collegano siti che AMANO e che leggono con normale frequenza. Non si possono avere valutazioni. Serve per ordinare i colleghi in base alla valutazione assegnata dall’amministratore. È possibile farlo attraverso l’interfaccia di trascinamento. Sarebbe bello se potessimo permettere al pubblico di valutare i nostri colleghi, e allora questa caratteristica sarebbe davvero interessante. Indirizzo RSS per il collegamento. Non ho mai usato questa caratteristica, ma potrebbe essere utile per alcuni di voi. Una caratteristica che ci manca assolutamente è l’indirizzo dell’immagine. È vero che è possibile utilizzare immagini nei menu di WordPress, ma è necessario creare una classe CSS per ogni elemento. Questo è qualcosa che la maggior parte dei clienti non può fare. Se riuscissimo ad aggiungere un modo per aggiungere icone ai menu di WordPress (sia nel core che attraverso un plugin), potremmo sbarazzarci completamente dell’area dei Collegamenti.
Ora, abbiamo visto alcune persone che usano i link come post type. Quindi aggiungono i colleghi e li visualizzano su una pagina separata che chiamano “Risorse o amici”. Ma con i formati degli articoli di WordPress nella versione 3.1, è possibile aggiungere collegamenti in ogni caso. Quindi non ha più senso usare i formati dei post per i link, piuttosto che usarli come post type separato?

is there a plugin or an easy way to move links to a menu? Anty suggestion on how to do it that doesn’t involve c&p one at a time?

It’s true that a custom menu works better for including links on a sidebar, but that’s not why I need Link Manager functionality.
You need Link Manager to allow nRelate to pull related content from external sites.

I have to agree. I think you could move the entire Links section into a plugin that people can install if they need it. I’ve only used it on one site ever, so I’d bet most sites won’t miss this too much. It would be nice if someone took this on and improved the future Links plugin to add features, etc. You’d get the best of both worlds then.

I used to have a long link of friend’s blogs as Blogroll. But now I have them using the WP Menus. I have never used separate icons for the links but I guess it is useful for many. Personally I can live with WordPress without the Links option

I always use Admin Menu Editor and the first thing I get rid of is the Links menu item

Personally, I think moving the Links section to an optional plugin–like the current import feature–would be a great move. It would also keep in line with WordPress’ move to turn all references of “blog” into “site.”

my idea to definitely get rid of the word “Blogroll” as that is probably the most outdated word on the entire WordPress install. I still use the links section with additional customizations on most sites of clients, but I normally use a Page to display them and then show a few random ones in the sidebar (if at all)
Regarding the sidebar links you are right on the dot when you say that the exact same can be accomplished with menus!

Ah, I get what you are saying now. But creating another widget would make the widget itself very complicated. Because widget screens are very small to begin with.

I know what you are referring to but I must not be explaining myself very well. I was just suggesting removing the current links option, and replacing it with a new widget option since that is where they end up anyways.

Alan, I don’t think you are getting what we are referring to. There is an option in the left dashboard menu called Links. Which is used by users to add links and then they can display those in the sidebar using Widgets…
There was a Menus feature added in WordPress 3.0 which can be found in Appearence > Menus (which lets you create cool menus to display on your site)… Those have drag-drop feature and most of the feature that Links has.
So we are suggesting that Links should be removed… The new links widget?? I don’t know if such thing is planned for 3.3.

Well I would assume a new links widget would have a drag and drop ordering system, the same way the widgets themselves have drag and drop ordering. (By menu I was referring to the the main left column of links in WordPress’ back end).

links are always pretty much redundant in my wp themes and they seem quite old fashioned to me – I often take the links menu item out of my wp-admin installs via some functions.php trickery. So i agree that menus should be moved to the top line. I also use widgets a lot and it kind of annoys me that they sit as a child listing under appearance.

I find them more simpler for the final user.
They can categorize in the same way as posts and the plus is including an image to every link, very simple.

– Bernardo please share why you think keeping Links are useful. We wrote an entire article pointing out why we think Menus are better. Would be glad to hear your point of view.
– Alan but beginners like the ability to control the order of their links. Which is usually controlled by the output in theme’s code. We get tons of requests for people asking how to do that. Menus have drag-drop feature which is really easy.

A simple built in links widget would probably be nice for beginners, but a menu tab of its own doesn’t seem necessary. Sidenote: I think the width of the menu column should be adjustable because some custom post type titles can be long and it starts looking goofy when every one or two words are indented to the next line.
