Gravatar (Globally Recognized Avatar) è un servizio che permette di gestire il proprio avatar online e di assicurarsi che abbia lo stesso aspetto su diverse piattaforme. Consente di visualizzare un’immagine avatar accanto al proprio nome sui siti WordPress.
Con anni di esperienza in WordPress, abbiamo visto in prima persona i vantaggi dell’uso di Gravatar per il branding personale e aziendale. In questo articolo discuteremo cos’è un Gravatar e perché dovreste iniziare a usarlo subito.
Storia: Avatar
Il termine Avatar è stato preso in prestito dalle Community di gioco online tra la fine degli anni ’90 e l’inizio del 2000.
Prima di allora, i forum online erano principalmente Community basate sul testo, in cui gli utenti erano identificati solo dal loro nome utente.
Man mano che queste Community crescevano, diventava sempre più difficile identificare gli utenti solo con il loro nome.
Per risolvere questo problema, i forum online permettevano agli utenti di caricare un’immagine come foto del profilo. Questa immagine veniva chiamata “Avatar” anziché foto del profilo.
Il termine Avatar si riferisce a un’immagine che rappresenta una persona o un utente. Questa immagine può essere la propria o qualsiasi altra immagine che si voglia utilizzare come foto del profilo.
Con l’evoluzione del web e del blogging, i blog WordPress hanno dovuto affrontare un problema simile. I commenti di WordPress sono diventati il centro di conversazione di molti blog ed è stato più difficile identificare i commentatori con il solo nome.
A differenza dei forum online, dove era necessario creare un account, i commentatori di WordPress in genere non hanno bisogno di creare un account per lasciare un commento.
A questo punto è arrivato Gravatar.

Che cos’è un Gravatar?
Gravatar è l’acronimo di Globally Recognized Avatar. È un popolare servizio web che consente alle persone di creare un profilo e di associare immagini avatar ai loro indirizzi email.
Una volta aggiunto un Gravatar, questo verrà riconosciuto su tutte le piattaforme dotate di supporto Gravatar integrato, tra cui WordPress, Slack, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Atlassian e altre ancora.
Ciò significa che quando lasciate un commento su uno dei siti che supportano Gravatar, questo estrarrà il vostro Avatar riconosciuto a livello globale dai loro server e lo metterà in mostra accanto al vostro nome nei commenti e in altre aree.
Ad esempio, quando un utente lascia un commento su un sito WordPress, il suo Gravatar viene automaticamente mostrato accanto al suo commento.
Questo permette a ogni commentatore di avere la propria identità in tutto il web.
Perché aggiungere Gravatar?
Se siete blogger, organizzazioni no-profit, piccole imprese o chiunque voglia costruire un brand, dovete iniziare a usare Gravatar.
Un Gravatar vi permette di costruire la vostra identità on line e di creare una voce autorevole nel vostro settore.
All’inizio, quando si commenta sui blog, il Gravatar potrebbe non essere immediatamente visibile.
Tuttavia, se la stessa persona vede il vostro commento su numerosi siti che legge, probabilmente visiterà il vostro sito web.
Alcuni proprietari di siti web si lamentano del fatto che Gravatar rallenta i loro siti, e questo è il motivo più citato per cui i blogger scelgono di disabilitare Gravatar.

Come posso ottenere un Gravatar?
È possibile ottenere un Gravatar visitando il sito web di Gravatar e registrando un account gratuito.
È abbastanza facile creare un Gravatar per il proprio profilo.
Per prima cosa, è necessario visitare il sito web di Gravatar e fare clic sul pulsante “Inizia subito”.
A questo punto si accede alla pagina di registrazione.
Qui è necessario aggiungere il proprio indirizzo email e fare clic sul pulsante “Continua”. Una volta fatto ciò, vi verrà inviata un’email con un codice di verifica. È sufficiente inserire il codice e fare clic sul pulsante “Continua”.
A questo punto si accede alla Bacheca del proprio account Gravatar.
Fare clic sulla scheda “Avatar” nella colonna di sinistra per aprire nuove impostazioni.
Una volta lì, fare clic sul pulsante “Uploader Image” nella colonna di sinistra per aggiungere un’immagine Gravatar dal proprio computer. È anche possibile scattare una foto in tempo reale facendo clic sul pulsante “Usa la fotocamera”.
Per il Gravatar si consiglia di scegliere una bella immagine del proprio profilo o il logo della propria azienda. Tuttavia, se volete rimanere anonimi, potete utilizzare qualsiasi altra immagine che vi rappresenti.
Si aprirà l’editor di immagini di Gravatar, da cui è possibile ritagliare, ruotare, zoomare e vedere l’anteprima dell’immagine.
È anche possibile aggiungere filtri e configurare la luminosità, la saturazione e il contrasto dell’immagine secondo i propri gusti. Una volta soddisfatti, basta fare clic sul pulsante “Fatto” in alto.
Il vostro Gravatar è stato impostato.
Per mostrare questo Gravatar sul vostro sito WordPress, espandete la scheda “Account verificati” dalla colonna di sinistra della dashboard.
Si aprirà un elenco di piattaforme su cui è possibile attivare il proprio Gravatar. Da qui, selezionate l’opzione “WordPress”.
Si apriranno nuove impostazioni, dove sarà necessario seguire le istruzioni a video nella colonna di sinistra per aggiungere un Gravatar al proprio sito web.
Per farlo, copiare il codice incorpora fornito nella barra laterale e incollarlo su una pagina o una pubblicazione del sito web. Una volta fatto ciò, aggiungete l’URL della pagina sotto l’opzione “WordPress URL”.
Quindi, fare clic sul pulsante “Verifica account”.
Ora potete provare il vostro Gravatar lasciando un commento su un sito web o selezionando il profilo dell’autore sul vostro blog WordPress.

2. Cosa succede quando un utente non ha un’immagine Gravatar?

4. Posso disabilitare il mio account Gravatar?
Sì, è possibile disabilitare il proprio account Gravatar in qualsiasi momento. Basta accedere al proprio account sul sito web di Gravatar e selezionare l’opzione “Impostazioni account” dal menu a discesa sulla destra.

I want to use two gravatars, one for a book (it’s a reference book and the gravatar would be the “writer” of the book; the second would be for me writing or blogging as Flo. Is there a way to remove the photo class from the avatar images?
I ask this because I suspect it’s conflicting with our the rich snippets results in our theme.
Whenever a recipe has comments, the rich snippet thumbnail disappears from google, if there are no comments, the thumbnail is shown correctly.

Thanks! That did put me in the right direction, Turned out it was’nt the photo class but the v-card was the problem. After removing it from the comments, thumbnails started appearing again on Google!

I have my personal photo assigned to my primary e-mail address and my business logo assigned to another e-mail address, thus making it easy to post Blog Comments using either my personal profile or my company logo, as I see fit…

For those that don’t know about Avatars or setting up a gravatar it’s seems a daunting task but as you show it’s really pretty simple. And once done it’s much easier to create a an online identity that’s both constant and easy to use.

I like gravatar. I like it a lot. It helps brand you or give you an identity online. But I still need to update my Facebook photo or or Twitter avatar seperately. I think the next step and this would be easier if Facebook or Twitter implemented it, but alas its going to be gravatar is to hook up with both social services and using a Twitter api when you update the profile picture in Twitter, it updates your gravatar picture which then goes across the net. Building an app to connect with Facebook would work well.

My only issue with Gravatar (and WordPress) ist that they don’t allow special characters like the underline in icoco_de. So I am forced to register with a different account name that has not much to do with my “real” screen name on almost every other board or platform I visit.

Thank you for making this clear. Yes, I know that my Gravatar is linked to my email address. I also learned that I can set my “display name” to be icoco_de (which I did). But I’d like to “adjust” my profile to “gravatar.com/icoco_de” rather than “gravatar.com/icoco987”. This is what I meant, and this doesn’t seem possible.

i remember when i first got my gravatar it was around 2 years back. still haven’t changed it. when u r a blogger and comment a lot on other sites you should definitely get a gravatar which is used by wordpress and other cms for displaying avatars.
