How To Prevent Skype From Overwriting/Hijacking Your WordPress

Have you ever created what you thought was the perfect contact page only to have Skype mess it all up by linking all of the phone numbers?

Skype Link

Well, if you are tired of that happening there are a couple ways you can fix it. Recently we discussed one method in our article how to fix Skype overwriting numbers in WordPress themes. If you don’t want to deal with the code, then you can just use the Prevent Skype Overwriting plugin. This plugin automatically disables this Skype feature in your WordPress themes.

To get started install and activatePrevent Skype Overwriting plugin. There is no options page so once you have activated it you are good to go. If you load up your website again the Skype phone number links should be gone. This plugin runs silently in background without affecting your site’s load time.

This seems barmy. Why would you do this? If you don’t want Skype to make phone numbers clickable, turn the feature off in Skype.

Can you explain why you would want to do this with a plugin?

@webalyst You can’t go into your user’s browsers and turn the feature off. Second, A LOT of users have this in their browsers because skype turns it on, and they don’t know how to turn it off. Often the skype overwriting, will break the theme by pushing text onto next line, or mess up the spacing.

To keep your design from breaking, this should be done.

Using this plugin is the same as “going into your user’s browsers and turn[ing] the feature off” which I don’t think users will appreciate.

Using this plugin to solve the problem of Skype breaking your theme, is simply to have your theme (ok your website) breaking Skype.

Personally I don’t like this Skype feature, but had I chosen to leave it turned on I would be perplexed, and possibly annoyed to find some websites disabling it!

@webalyst Sometimes as a developer you have to make those decisions for your site. You can’t always keep everyone happy, but to keep the look of the site professional, this is probably the best.
