In general changing sidebar.php is only useful for older, non-widget enabled themes. Instead, you should use something like <a href="http://www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins/breukies-archives-widget" rel="nofollow">Breukie's Archive Widget</a> which allows you to set parameters like type and limit in the options.
