21 Popular Brands That Are Using WordPress
WordPress is a nifty software for managing content, or blogging. Due to the fact that it is open source, many say that it is not the best choice for a serious project due to insecurity and bunch of other nonsense reasons. To prove those points wrong and show you that WordPress can be used for serious projects that can go big scale, we are highlighting the most popular brands that are using WordPress.
1. Ebay
Ebay manages their official blog using WordPress. They have it custom designed to make it look flashy. Even though it doesn’t look like WordPress, it is WordPress.

Yahoo is also using WordPress to power multiple blogs that they own. This one is just one example.
3. Digg Blog
Popular Social Media site Digg is using WordPress to power their corporate blog.

Why is Mozilla Firefox in twice on 12 & 13
I know FF is uperior but doesn’t need ot be shown twice.
Error on our part. It is fixed. Thanks for pointing it out to us. We always count on our user support.
Yeah but how many of those sites have an open comment policy?
Take a look at the comment sections on most of those brands is empty or closed or highly moderated to push out differing opinion. CNN for example habitually trims the fat on criticisms or inaccuracies in reports.
That is the decision that any webmaster, person, or a corporate can make with their blog.
Dude, WordPress is Da Bomb! Plain and simple!

is there a .net version of wordpress?
Not that we can think of. There are several wordpress like .NET software. If you don’t mind us asking, why do you want a .NET version of Wordpress?
very nice
It’s amazing that something FREE can also mean quality. We’ve recently transitioned to using Wordpress on any new site we build and it’s saved us tonnes of time not to mention the looks on our clients’ faces when we show them how easy it is to maintain themselves.
It is NOT that easy for people who need to write Chinese in wordpress. The collation is always set for LATIN1-SWEDISH-CI, not UTF8-UNICODE-CI. Why Swedish???
Considering the population of Chinese in the world, if WP can rectify this inconvenience, it will be even more popular….
quick q:
ive been using WP for a while.. but ive been unable to find a plugin which can “unpublish” stories at a set time/date… is there one?
We have heard of plugins that can auto post but never heard of a plugin to auto remove posts after a certain time. Perhaps someone should develop it.
Te NFL also used wordpress for their blogs.
http://blogs.nfl.com/
Another authority site using Wordpress. Thanks for mentioning it.
I can assure you that Download.com (and the rest of CNET) is NOT using WordPress.
General Electric (GE), not General Electronic.
Anyway, that’s one thing I didn’t have regrets, starting my blogging with WordPress.
It’s disheartening that the majority of this “big brand” sites on this list are using outdated versions of WordPress.
2.3.1 on WebMonkey? You’d think *they* would know better.
It’s People Magazine, not People’s Magazine. Also, GE stands for General Electric, not General Electronics.
We love it! Operate more than 30 blogs on wordpress – here is one of them – http://CondoDomain.com/Blog
How about where Wordpress is used for something other than blogs? We are using it as a platform for websites for small businesses.
Yes We are using it on this site as well which doesn’t really look like a blog itself
Wordpress works out great for other purposes as well.
The only problem with using it for small business – and I use it for my business – is that, technically, it’s against the service policy. WordPress is for blogging, and they specifically prohibit commercial use. Having said that, I’ve only heard rumours about them following up, but it’s a risk one should take open-eyed. I blog at least weekly on my business site, which I’m hoping keeps me under the radar…
Can you please refer us to the document. We have never seen such argument. Wordpress is not to be distributed, but it is open to be used for personal and commercial use. Wordpress does not limit you to just blogs, it appreciates you to create platforms on it. Wordpress.org showcases many businesses.
It’s wordpress.com that has the business restriction. It doesn’t apply to websites that are self-hosted.
Um CNet’s Download blog is using a custom CMS not WordPress. ZDNet blogs (http://blogs.zdnet.com/) is however using a older version of WordPress.
I highly doubt that NYTimes is running wordpress. It’s movable type!
Not when their Source File shows folders wp-includes, and they have a meta generator that shows they are using Wordpress 2.6.5
Faramarz: New York Times blog is definitely using WP, in fact, it is talked about in this article about Matt (who started Wordpress), in Inc. Magazine:
http://www.inc.com/magazine/20090601/the-way-i-work-matt-mullenweg.html
it states: Mullenweg, 25, is the founder of Automattic, the company behind the open-source blogging tool WordPress and a handful of other software projects. WordPress.com powers 12 million blogs, including those of The New York Times…
Another BIG name is Harvard Law School: http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/
My company has been using WPMU for a couple of years and currently host over 500 custom designed blogs. WP is amazing. Just amazing.
Very nice to know that a prestigious University like Harvard is using Wordpress. The best part is that they are giving wordpress the credit which we believe everyone should do.
Crazy! The list forgot StroupeCondoBlog.com. Sup with that?
We only highlighted one of the most popular brands that almost everyone have heard of.
Sony’s blog shows the *.aspx extension, ehhhm… WordPress is PHP, not .NET?
It must already be modified to have a centralized user database. Looking at its meta generator it says WordPress 2.8.2.
Great list!
As a WP designer/devloper, it makes me jealous to see that at least 3 of these blogs – eBay, Yahoo, & Playstation – were all done by Voce Communications (http://vocecommunications.com/).
Wow I haven’t opened ebay for years. Just realized they’re using wordpress now. Makes me proud. LOL. I just started to use WP for my photography business blog. And it’s really useful & effective
Thanks for the list!
It’s never been easier to make a website with Wordpress. Its user friendly, easy to manage, easy to update. No need to know complex html coding anymore. Now people can have a website in just 5 minutes time. Isn’t that amazing..
This article has been shared on favSHARE.net.
look like wordpress.. lol
I’m starting to think that I should stop categorizing editors in the same worthless pile as lawyers, police and priest.
wow, wordpress is much more powerfull than before.
Just want to letting you know that Sony & CPanel aren’t wordpress based.
We got these sites straight from Wordpress.org Showcase. But you are correct there is no worpdress code that can be found on either Cpanel or Sony. Either they have changed, or they are using an extremely modified version of Wordpress.
Wow! I can not believe that CNN and Samsung using wordpress!
I know the title of the post is popular brands, and that Mr. Brown & Co are not popular ut http://www.number10.gov.uk (is wordpress too) wher the UK Labour Leader is trying to recreate some Obama magic but not quite getting there
It is easy to understand because Wordpress now is the best CMS.
Hmm… Great list. I think it’s very helpful as beginer and as expert
. Thanks
WordPress is really versatile, and I use it a lot in designing my websites, didn’t realize so many well-known companies where going the same route. It’s the CMS, so useful for clients to maintain their own site and not have to rely on a webmaster. Love it!
Great post team! Gettin addicted to WP Beginner!!
Do keep up the great quality..
Oh yes! Greatest list Top10. WordPress – is CMS of future.
Great list of brands. It’s always nice to see some large companies using the WordPress platform. If anything, it makes it easier to convince people that WP is more than capable of running a website!
A very good compilation. Keep up your good work!
I used to custom build CMS apps for fun as part of a website project. Then a client asked me to install Wordpress as a blog, then I realized you could use it as a CMS and since then I haven’t looked back. The projects get done in a third of the time. I’ve been able to bring the price of a project down, get more work and still make a decent living with a third of the usual stress. Clients love it too.
GE stands for “General Electric” not “General Electronic”
Damn, that sound’s so easy if you think about it.
WP is the best Blog for me !
Shirtinator works also with WP
All of the blogs for The San Jose Mercury News, Contra Costa Times and Oakland Tribune use WordPress.
http://www.insidebayarea.com/blogs
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/
I’ve been thinking that WP is super smart – so easy, good analytics, cheap or free. And I’m obviously not the only one!
Indeed WordPress is a powerful and easy to use CMS – even in our company Genotec AG, a Swiss Internet Service Provider, all employees from administration to technic do use WP for the intranet and officially company blog.
You saved me with this post. Saved me the time of researching commercial brands who use Wordpress. THANK YOU! You guys rock!
I’m in love with both eBay and Flickr’s blog. While eBay is more appealing to my creative eye, the simplicity of Flickr’s blog is noteworthy as well.
No way, i never would have guesssed ebay. Wordpress has been great for me, its easy to use and the plugins are easy to implement.
Also some famous Musicians use Wordpress: http://www.duranduran.com and http://blog.bjork.com/
I’d add http://www.number10.gov.uk/ – okay not necessarily a ‘popular’ brand, but a very well known one nevertheless.
Love the Ford WorPress site. Does anyone know if the theme they use is available to purchase?
Probably not.
wow! i’m happy to be among such an impressive group. but this leads me to a question: can i change my domain at this point or will i lose my blog and all of my posts?
You will not lose any of your blog post because you can export all content from wordpress.com site and import it into your new site. If you don’t want to deal with all that. We can do it for you if you sign up using our free setup service.
sweeet! thanks. you guys rock.
Awesome collection. Big brands using Wordpress shows that great things doesn’t have to be expensive or cost money at all
