How to Set a Minimum Comment Length in WordPress

Short comments are both annoying and mostly unhelpful. While we do appreciate all the users thanking us for writing amazing articles, these comments do NOT add any long-term value. If you go on a forum, you will notice that most of them have a minimum word count for forum posts. However, there is no built-in way of setting a minimum comment length in WordPress. In this article, we will show you how you can set a minimum comment length in WordPress to increase the quality of comment.

First thing you need to do is install and activate Minimum Comment Length Plugin for WordPress.

Once you activate it, all you need to do is go to Settings » Min Comment Length. Then set the minimum comment length like its shown in the screenshot below:

That’s all there is to it. The plugin checks the comment for a set minimum length and disapprove it if it’s too short (except if you’re either an editor or an admin).

Did you know that you can set a minimum word count for WordPress posts. Check out our article on how to set a minimum word count for WordPress posts.

This will help moderators BUT :

Who claim short comments are annoying? I’m affraid this could turn into bad UX.

Moreover I’ve never seen spam with a very short length so this will just disappoint kindly commenters.

we can definitely prevent spam comments from this plugin but dont u think some ppl want to ask their questions in a shortcut way…sometimes it will curb genuine comments from appearing too…rest assured akismet always does its job!

You really think a genuine question can be asked in 15 characters?

it doesnt hav to be always questions…i hav attached a screenshot to let you know how comments can differ and sometimes be very helpful towards providing a better user experience.

If you read the comment in that screenshot, you can probably count the characters there. It’s definitely more than 15. Even your reply comment was more than 15 characters. It also doesn’t have any limit for admin and editor replies. I think you are misunderstanding the point here. 15 characters if you think about it is not that many. But it’s really annoying when a comment is “Great :) ” or just a smiley face.

hmm now i understood…i thought 15 was the word count..sorry my bad! its characters and yes i agree 15 characters is very small…totally a recommended plugin no doubt :)
